The metal seated ball valve design enables the ball valve to occupy a large part of the market share dominated by ancient gate valves for decades. If the hardened seat surface is not scratched by debris in the pipeline, the metal seat and special coated ball closely fit a set of precision coated and ground seats to provide zero leakage. When a larger size and higher pressure ball valve is required, the steering trunnion type is designed. The trunnion differs from the floating type in that the trunnion ball is fixed in the main body through the trunnion at the bottom (short connecting rod) and the rod at the top. Since the ball cannot “float” into the seat for reliable closure, the seat must float onto the ball. The trunnion seat is designed so that it is excited by upstream pressure and forced into the ball for sealing. Because the ball is firmly fixed in place, in addition to its 90o rotation, extraordinary fluid force and pressure will not clamp the ball into the valve seat. On the contrary, the force only acts on a small area around the periphery of the floating seat. Smaller floating ball valves are used in many different applications, from domestic piping to piping containing the most demanding chemicals.
